the Art of Engaging Stage Presence: Insider Tips for Speakers
I recently shared these pointers with a remarkable group of high-end entrepreneurs I had the pleasure of coaching for a special speaker event.
Thought I'd share them with you here :)
As you step onto that stage, here are some friendly reminders:
CONNECT: Speak TO the audience from an energized alive place --
This is an exchange; a shared experience -
Be a good guide - take folks along on your journey.
BTW -you don't have to look people in the eyes - see whole beings instead -- people will feel seen and included.
GROUND: If you get nervous or forget what you are going to say, lean in, stay present, allow the moment, take a deep breath - focus outward -see something specific (inanimate) - trust. You've got this!
SKIP THE SPIRITS: A quick word of advice—hold off on the pre-talk drinks. Alcohol might seem like a nerve-soother, but it can put a damper on your senses. Stay clear-headed for a sparkling performance. (I learned this the hard way 20+ years ago -- I was so nervous before a show that I took a couple of shots to ease my mind -- I was slow on all my cues and less sharp -- now, I wait until after a show)
FINALLY -
Before you go onstage, as you are waiting -
Breathe from your belly;
Lengthen your neck, wiggle your toes, press a big toe into the floor (activates the vagus nerve), keep breathing -
Don't go over what you are going to say, you have done the work - trust yourself.
When it is your time to go on stage - bring your ancestors, your joy.
When you get to the stage - ground yourself BEFORE you speak:
Feel your feet, weight slightly forward as you lean into each moment;
Enjoy the people, feel the love,
Stand tall, own the room, and breathe in before you speak out.
