"Who are you?" "Tell me about yourself?"

Have you asked someone these questions and ended up feeling you knew more about the person BEFORE they spoke? (hello body language). I believe this happens because folks (business world/networking) memorize (because they've been told they need a 30second or elevator pitch). Sadly, it can leave one feeling distant from that person. Certainly, not interested in pursuing a deeper conversation.

I really love Steve Harper's (www.yourcreativelife.com) take on this (from his YouTube page - https://lnkd.in/g3JxD3Ry - so much great content!) --

3 simple steps that can open up possibilities for connection. And, you don't have to be a writer or in the entertainment business for this to be useful- in fact, substitute "writer" for "human" --

A big key though is practice.
Write down your thoughts - try first 5-10 minutes of simple stream-of-conscious writing - let your inner editor take a break - now, what comes to you first? second? third? What has happened to you that has impacted you? How did this inform your work, style, way? What have you done that gives us a sense of who you are? Beyond your title? Who are you separate from your work? Write it all down. Highlight/Circle/Check the most important bits --

Create a simple genuine response based on your truths which will help us (a colleague, potential collaborator, potential friend etc) to get a sense of who you are (this may change depending on the person/people, situation) ... Now speak the words aloud, OWN your story - share with friends, family, your coach -- folks who can listen curiously rather than critically to begin. This will help your body to ease into this sometimes awkward exchange - you will be building a muscle of ease while leaning in to the experience.

Find what works for you and feels authentic. Speak from your heart and mind intelligence.

Remember, this sharing of who you are is an exchange and opportunity to connect. EnJOY!
